About the event
Wise Women
Alison Cooper (curator, composer and artist) will present a talk reflecting on wise women from England with a focus on the county of Lancashire. Through archive records, dialect poetry, and the history of medical herbalism, it will explore the lives and practices of wise women in English society. Song, dialect poetry and oral history recordings will be used to delve deeper into the topic.
The inspiration for this research comes from Alison's own family history. Her ancestor was remembered as an unofficial midwife practicing in a working-class immigrant community during the late 1800s and early 1900s. A focus on specific individuals such as Ellen Wallace, Elizabeth Stratchey, and Hilda Leyel will be discussed.
Alison Cooper currently works as Senior Curator at Towneley Hall Art Gallery & Museum. She also works as an artist under the moniker Magpahi, using musical composition and performance to re-interpret narratives of the human experience and the natural world.
