About the event

What Happened when the British Met Indian Folklore? A Megalithic Problem.

We all know that the British Isles has a rich tapestry of folklore and superstition. So what happened when the British in the nineteenth century encountered India, another country with an incredibly diverse religious, folklore, and mythological, tradition? How did British administrators and academics react to a culture that was similar in many ways, yet so different, to what they knew?

And, more specifically, how did they handle the wealth of stories and local knowledge that surrounded India’s very own Megalithic tradition? The results were a complex web of racism and prejudice, but also of curiosity and fascination- so let’s unpick it!

Charlotte Coull is an independent scholar with a PhD in history from the University of Manchester. Her research interests include the cultural history of stone, the history of British archaeology, and human interactions with the material…
