In times past wells and springs provided not only a source of clean water but also a meeting place, a site of religious veneration or a place to look for a cure for illness. In the 19th century this became big business as people sought to make their fortunes through the healing power of water.

About the event

Now that most people obtain their water from mains supply, the wellheads which once provided their only source of drinking water lie neglected by the sides of our busy main roads. However, their former importance cannot be underestimated. In times past wells and springs provided not only a source of clean water but also a meeting place, a site of religious veneration or a place to look for a cure for illness. In the 19th century this became big business as people sought to make their fortunes through the healing power of water.
