About the event
Rushbearing is a custom that originated as a religious celebration, but alongside which developed more secular aspects such as the boisterous rushcart processions that often overshadowed the original intent. At times suppressed by the church and later by well meaning or self interested civic and commercial organisations, it still continued in some northern towns until the mid to late 19th century. In some rural locations it has continued as a custom close to its origins to the present day and over recent years there has been a few revivals of the rushcart processions in towns where they were once popular community events.
