2. Mythology and Folklore
Building on our exploration of queer history, the second session will delve into the mythological elements of heritage. This session will move beyond well-known examples of transgenderism in Greek mythology to encompass a broader spectrum of global mythologies. By examining these rich narratives, we aim to uncover the deep-rooted presence of gender variance in various cultural traditions.
We will begin with Hindu mythology, exploring texts such as the Puranas and the Ramayana, which feature figures like Aravan, the progenitor, who embody gender fluidity. These stories highlight the longstanding acceptance and reverence of gender variance in Hindu culture.
Next, we will venture into other ancient mythologies, such as the Tagalog myths from the Philippines. Here, we will examine the transgender gods of creation, Lakapati and Bathala, who play pivotal roles in their cosmology. These deities not only represent the fluidity of gender but also underscore the integral role of gender diversity in the creation and sustenance of the universe.
Throughout this session, we will investigate the physical depictions of myths, including idols and symbols central to these belief systems. These visual representations will serve as powerful stimuli for our own creative responses, both in written and artistic forms. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on the symbolic significance of these myths and to reinterpret them through their unique perspectives.
By engaging with these diverse mythologies, we aim to foster a deeper understanding of how gender variance has been revered and integrated into cultural narratives across different societies. This exploration will reveal the universal nature of gender diversity and its profound impact on heritage and folklore.
Through creative writing and artistic expression, participants will not only connect with these ancient myths but also contribute to the contemporary narrative of queer identity. This session underscores the importance of mythology in shaping our understanding of gender and provides a platform for participants to explore and celebrate their own identities within the broader context of cultural heritage.
