About the event
Helen Sargeant is an artist and academic currently researching her matrilineal heritage in connection to the landscape of West Penwith and its megalithic sites. During the Spring of 2023 she carried out a residency at the Mên-an-Tol, a “holed stone” thought to be the remnants of a neolithic or bronze age stone circle. The Mên-an-Tol is is reputed to have healing powers. Women would crawl through the hole to aid fertility and to ease childbirth. Children were passed through the hole to cure illness and diseases including rickets. Helen produced performances, photographs and prints at the site in response to her research. Her talk will weave together folkloric stories associated with the Mên-an-Tol referencing history, contemporary art and her current practice.
