About the event

Lincolnshire Witches and Cunning Folk

Lincolnshire has a notable history of witchcraft, encompassing both folkloric and documented cases. Among the better known folk tales are those of the Friskney Witch and of Old Meg of Ancaster Heath. In contrast, the Witches of Belvoir represent a true and tragic account of persecution of a group of women who fell foul of the prevailing beliefs of their communities. Stories from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries reflect a continued belief in the power of witches to "overlook" individuals, as well as an enduring belief in traditional methods of counteracting witchcraft, such as drawing a witch's blood. This talk aims to provide an overview of historical and more recent instances of witchcraft in rural Lincolnshire.
